Believe This

On the subject of believing…

Whenever we share our beliefs it seems a special and sacred moment. When we meet we often begin a shared belief quest. Who are you, what do you believe. Society in general is uncomfortable with someone else’s different beliefs. Couples often split up because of differing belief systems. Raising a child when the parents have differing beliefs are believed the cause for all kinds of problems. Exclusive beliefs that are shared with your closest loved ones are the experience most of us need to feel safe. When someone dies, or is married, or divorced, or doesn’t divorce because of a belief, is easier when we all agree to believe the same thing. No results are required here, only belief, which then gets mixed up with having faith.

An Actor has an incredible advantage over these limited belief systems. And they are all exclusive and limited. An Actor can figure out what belief system the character is operating with and adopt that belief system immediately. This is very transformational and astonishing to those who have never changed belief systems nor investigated their own or others different from their own. This particular insight gives Actors a constant opportunity to examine and understand the value in all belief systems. This is why I believe Acting is a Healing Art. Walking in anothers shoes so to speak gives us the understanding we need to get along with those who are different from us.
